I am so excited to be sharing these roses! I love to have flowers in my home at all times, but in the winter, it can get kind of pricey. So I have dried hydrangeas (check out my post on drying hydrangeas) and faux flowers. With Valentines Day coming up, I searched for coffee filter roses I could make, but some of them were just too difficult, or didn’t have the look that I wanted. I sat on the couch one evening and came up with my own way, and I am so thrilled with the result!! So grab yourself some supplies, and let’s make some roses!!!
Supplies
- round coffee filters
- scissors
- stem wire from a craft store (or any small gauge wire)
- faux greenery
- hot glue gun
- floral tape
- paint or food colouring (if you want to colour your roses)
Each rose will take 3 coffee filters. Begin by colouring your filters. I used watered down paint in a small bowl for my roses, but I used food colouring when making my coffee filter flowers. The technique is the same. When your filters are dry (you can leave them overnight, or layer them on a cookie sheet and place in a warm oven (300 degrees) for a half hour or so) separate them into stacks of 3.

Take your first filter and cut the centre out..I used the bottom of the filter as a guide. (this will be your bud in the middle of the rose) Then, cut the 2nd and 3rd filter into scallops. There is no wrong way to do this. I found that if I made 6 scallops, the rose was a tiny bit fuller, but the majority of my roses I have pictured are made with 5 scallops. Continue cutting scallops all the way around the filter, being careful not to cut the scallops so tall that you cut into the round bottom of the filter. Now cut the centre out of the the 2nd and 3rd filters. (these are the petals of the rose) Now you are ready to assemble!
Start by gluing the end of the wire to the end of your first coffee filter. Now start to twist the filter around the wire, until its all wrapped around. I like to twist and squish the end. I found the more you squish the end, the fuller the petals were.
If you want to wrap some floral tape around this, just as it is, it would look lovely in a bouquet mixed with fuller flowers! Next step is to add a tiny dot of hot glue to secure it.
Wrap one of the scalloped filters on next. You can add a tiny dot of hot glue at the start to help it stay in place. Wrap the scalloped filter a teensie (technical term haha) bit below the bud. Secure with a dot of glue when you come to the end. Now wrap the other scalloped filter the same way..beginning with a tiny dot of glue, and starting it a tiny bit below the previous one. As you wrap, you can manipulate the petals out to form a flower. The filters are pretty tough, and can handle some tweaking. End with a dot of glue.
I pulled pieces off of a sprig of faux greenery to glue to my roses. Glue your preferred greenery on your roses. Then wrap the entire base, greenery and all, with floral tape. This is what really makes it all good and secure!
Some of my roses ended up more full than others, which was great! Feel free to experiment! I found it helpful to have everything all cut (wire and filters and floral tape) and ready to go, so you can make a bunch all at once. I had strips of floral tape cut and hanging from edge of the table, so I could easily grab one when I was ready to wrap the rose! And also have a bowl of cold water handy to dip your fingers in if you burn them on hot glue (which I did several times)
