Transforming a Metal Box

my transformed old metal box
How we built our Potting Bench here..

It’s been so hot and humid here, but that didn’t stop me from crafting something. Cleaning the house?… too hot for that….much more fun to create!..haha

I’ve had this blue metal box, with a hinged lid, for quite some time now. I forget where I picked it up, but I can guarantee I didn’t spend much on it. It was rusty, and rickety, but the hinged lid still worked..and it’s perfect in my Potting Shed! It didn’t take long to transform it!

I started by taking a cloth to remove any spider webs and dust. I didn’t sand the rust off or anything, because I didn’t care if it chipped or flaked. I sprayed it with Rust-Oleum spray paint. I had this colour in my stash ( I don’t believe they have this exact colour anymore). It only took a couple quick coats.

Once that was dry, I used some stencils to draw on the front with a pencil. I chose to spell out “Garden Tools” because it was going to be used in the Shed. Now math is NOT my strong suit, so Gerald mapped out where my letters were placed. (there may have been some raised voices involved, when I said I was just going to stencil the letters on freehand..just being honest haha)

I grabbed a small paint brush and used Rust-Oleum chalked paint in turquoise. I love this colour! (in hindsight, I shouldn’t have used such a heavy hand when tracing my letters out, because I had to make sure all the pencil lines were covered well.)

I’m so happy how this turned out! It didn’t take long at all (the longest was figuring out spacing of the letters). It could have been turned into a bread box, sewing box, compost bin..so many possibilities!…. just by changing the letters! Hopefully this has inspired you to give something overlooked a new life!

Thank you so much for stopping by!
