DIY “Vintage” Ornaments

You know I love vintage. And I love a good DIY. But I am also frugal, and I’m going to admit it…lazy. I like crafts that don’t take alot of effort, money or time! These ornaments fit the bill. I love to collect vintage ornaments. And if they have paint chipping off, all the better.

You can create the look of vintage ornaments with just a few items!

start with a plain plastic ornament

  • silver plastic ornament
  • spray bottle
  • vegetable oil
  • water
  • spray paint (colour of choice) I used 2 different colours, but this isn’t necessary
  • black spray paint for ornament cap
  • think wire and floral foam (to suspend your wet ornament on to dry)

Fill a spray bottle with water and approximately 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. This isn’t an exact measurement, I just filled my bottle full of water and added some oil to it.

Place pieces of wire in floral foam, so that when you are finished painting your ornament, you can place each ornament on a wire to dry.

Remove the cap of the ornament and spray paint them black. ( It was a really nice day, so I put the caps on bamboo skewers, and stuck them in mulch outside to spray them..haha) This isn’t a necessary step, but I find it makes the ornament look more vintage.

Spray your ornament with the water/oil solution.

Spray your ornament very lightly with spray paint, allowing alot of the silver to still show through.

First coat of spray paint (Pink Peony)
Second colour sprayed on (Champagne Pink)

Take the second colour of spray paint and spray it lightly on the ornament. (no need to wait for the first coat to dry, spray on the ornament right away) I used two different colours of pink…this isn’t necessary, one colour would work just fine.

By spraying the ornament with the water/oil solution, it repels the spray paint and creates such a nice old, worn look.

I then place the ornament on a piece of wire and let it dry! This took about 2-3 hours. After they are dry, replace the caps, add some pretty ribbon and hang on the tree!! Instant “vintage” ornaments!

Experiment by using different coloured ornaments and spray paint! Christmas decorating does not need to be expensive!! Use what you have! Dig around in your stash, or grab some plastic ornaments at the thrift store to transform! I had so much fun creating these, and I hope you give them a try! I have a few more ideas for easy crafts coming your way, stay tuned!

As always, thanks so much for stopping by! Happy crafting!
